Fourth Grade
Fourth grade is a year of growing independence as students deepen their understanding across all subject areas while becoming more confident critical thinkers. Through engaging lessons, collaborative learning, and hands-on experiences, students are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, and make meaningful connections. Using HMH Into Reading, HMH Into Math, and FOSS Science, our curriculum challenges students academically while fostering curiosity and a love of learning.
Reading & Language Arts
Using HMH Into Reading, students strengthen reading comprehension, literary analysis, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills through a diverse selection of fiction and informational texts. Students learn to support their ideas with evidence while becoming thoughtful readers and effective communicators.
Students learn to:
- Analyze characters, themes, and author's purpose
- Cite evidence to support ideas
- Expand academic vocabulary
- Write informative, opinion, and narrative essays
- Conduct research and present findings
Mathematics
Using HMH Into Math, students develop a deeper understanding of multi-digit operations, fractions, geometry, and measurement while strengthening mathematical reasoning and problem-solving.
Students learn to:
- Multiply and divide multi-digit numbers
- Add, subtract, and compare fractions
- Solve measurement and conversion problems
- Analyze geometric figures
- Explain mathematical thinking using multiple strategies
Science
Using FOSS Science, students investigate Earth's changing surface, energy, and ecosystems through inquiry-based investigations and hands-on experiments.
Students explore:
- Soils, rocks, and landforms
- Weathering and erosion
- Energy and electricity
- Light and waves
- Ecosystems and environmental interactions
Religion
Students continue growing in their Catholic faith through prayer, Scripture, weekly Mass, and service. They deepen their understanding of Church teachings while learning to live their faith through compassion, leadership, and service to others.
Technology Use
Device Used: Chromebook
Weekly Use: Less than 200 minutes per week, during core curriculum, including:
- 80 minutes of iReady personal lessons (Office of Catholic Schools requirement)
- Remaining minutes used during core instruction

- Students may bring Chromebooks home for homework assignments approximately twice per week
Beyond the Classroom
Fourth graders participate in Art, Music, Physical Education, French, Technology, Library, field trips, faith-centered activities, and service opportunities that enrich classroom learning and strengthen our school community.
