Fifth Grade

Fifth grade prepares students for the transition to middle school by encouraging greater independence, responsibility, and academic confidence. Through challenging coursework and meaningful learning experiences, students develop the critical thinking and organizational skills needed for future success. Instruction is supported by HMH Into Reading, HMH Into Math, and FOSS Science.

Reading & Language Arts

Using HMH Into Reading, students read increasingly complex literature and informational texts while strengthening analytical thinking, writing, vocabulary, and research skills.

Students learn to:

• Analyze literary and informational texts
• Support ideas using textual evidence
• Conduct research projects
• Write organized essays for multiple purposes
• Strengthen grammar and communication skills

Mathematics

Using HMH Into Math, students build proficiency with fractions, decimals, volume, coordinate graphing, and mathematical reasoning through real-world problem-solving.

Students learn to:

• Perform operations with fractions and decimals
• Solve multi-step real-world problems
• Calculate volume
• Graph points on the coordinate plane
• Identify patterns and relationships

Science

Using FOSS Science, students investigate Earth's systems, matter, and living systems while developing scientific reasoning through experimentation and engineering design.

Students explore:

• Earth and the solar system
• Earth's systems
• Mixtures and solutions
• Living systems
• Environmental stewardship

Religion

Students continue strengthening their relationship with Christ through Scripture, prayer, weekly Mass, and service. They are encouraged to become faith-filled leaders who use their gifts to serve others.

Students continue to explore their interests through Art, Music, Physical Education, Spanish, Technology, Library, leadership opportunities, service projects, and school traditions.
