Second Grade

Second grade is an exciting year as students become increasingly independent learners while strengthening academic skills and preparing to receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Using HMH Into Reading, HMH Into Math, and FOSS Science, students continue developing confidence through meaningful learning experiences.

Reading & Language Arts

Using HMH Into Reading, students strengthen reading fluency, comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and writing while exploring increasingly complex texts.

Students learn to:

  • Read fluently with expression
  • Identify main ideas and supporting details
  • Compare fiction and nonfiction
  • Write organized paragraphs
  • Build vocabulary and grammar skills

Mathematics

Using HMH Into Math, students extend place value understanding while developing fluency with addition and subtraction.

Students learn to:

  • Add and subtract within 1,000
  • Build multiplication readiness
  • Measure and compare lengths
  • Interpret data
  • Explain mathematical reasoning

Science

Using FOSS Science, students investigate Earth's materials, matter, and living organisms through hands-on exploration.

Students explore:

  • Pebbles, sand, and silt
  • Solids and liquids
  • Insects and plants
  • Habitats
  • Landforms

Religion

Second graders prepare for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion while deepening their understanding of God's love through prayer, Scripture, and service.

Technology Use

Device Used: iPad

Weekly Use: Less than 150 minutes per week, including:

  • 80 minutes of iReady personal lessons (Office of Catholic Schools requirement)
  • Remaining minutes used during core instruction
Instructional Time on Devices: Less than 8% of total school minutes

Beyond the Classroom

Students participate in Art, Music, Physical Education, French, Technology, Library, and school traditions that help them grow academically, spiritually, and socially.
